Fad diets become very popular but controversial recently. While people who are overweight will often seek to lose weight, it is the unfortunate case that many of these people will resort to fad diets that promise extraordinary results with very little concern for the health of the individual.
In April 2003, the most famous pioneer of the fad diet craze, Doctor Robert Atkins died. He was reported to have weighed a rather hefty 255lbs at the time of his death.
What is so wrong about this diet?
Well, American Heart has announced to public via its website that this diet can undermine our health, cause physical discomfort (abdominal discomfort and flatulence [gas] ) and lead to disappointment when we regain weight soon after we lose it. Wow, seems scary, then what?
Quick-weight-loss usually violate the first principle of good nutrition: Eat a balanced diet that includes a variety of foods. In other words, we can say that this type of diet will not fulfill our nutrition needs. People who stay on this diet for weeks may have a nutritional deficiencies, because no one type of food has all the nutrients we need for good health.
This diet also violate a second important principle of good nutrition: Eating should be enjoyable, because it is so monotonous and boring that it’s almost impossible to stay on them for long periods.
So, I guess, fad diet may be safe for a short term, but undesirable to follow permanantly seeing the reasons above. Let’s have a proper and safe diet method, everyone!
