Synthetic biology has long been used to describe an approach to biology that attempts to integrate different areas of research in order to create a more holistic understanding of life. This is a combination between science and engineering in order to design and build novel biological functions and systems.
Now, US researchers showing off their ability to redraw the blueprints of life like inventors in a scrap yard. Their new achievement—synthetic biology—challenge their ability to break down living organisms into parts that can be used to build new ones that do what they want.
Pamela Silver led a team at Harvard that altered a yeast cell so that it and its descendants would always remember if the parent cell had been dunked in a particular sugar. Silver and colleagues altered the yeast’s DNA to include two genetic switches. The first switch is triggered by the sugar galactose, and then throws the second switch which acts as the cell’s memory.
MIT’s Registry of Standard Biological Parts is step towards that shelf of components - synthetic biologists add information on how to construct parts they have created to the site, NewScientist reported.
