Omega-3 Fatty Acids For a Healthy Heart

One common form of cholesterol medication is Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Omega-3 fatty acids, in concentrated doses, can help control elevated levels of triglycerides, and omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce the rate of death from coronary heart disease in survivors of heart attack. Fish, such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring, anchovies, albacore tuna, and lake trout, are some of the richest sources of omega-3 fatty acid as well as margarine, pasta, certain brands of eggs, milk, and meat.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends eating a variety of fish at least twice a week for a healthy heart. For those who don’t like fish, fish oil supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids are available. Two to four grams of a fish oil supplement per day are typically needed to have a beneficial effect on triglycerides.

In fact, Omega-3 fatty acids may slightly raise LDL cholesterol. There is a wide assortment of drugs for lowering LDL cholesterol. So, we have to learn how to use them, separately or together. As usual, the rule of thumb is : ask your doctor for some recommendation to address your condition :-P
